Re: Ancestry
Mostly creole. On my mom's side Spanish men married French women. On my dad's side French (somewhat Germanic) men married Spanish women. I'm distantly related to some moderately notable historical figures in New Orleans. Probably distantly related to half of Southern Louisiana one way or another. Th...

Favorite Commercials real or otherwise
On the one hand I hate advertising and I think it's one of the most insidious poisons in our society. But some commercials still manage to entertain or otherwise delight me - even as I'm aware that I'm being manipulated. https://youtu.be/bJIOlwhZg-g https://youtu.be/5wTx6P-hhCc And then there are th...

Re: Podcasts, courses, documentary series, etc
The History of English podcast is really good.
It's pretty dense and I'm not interested in more recent history so I doubt I'll ever finish it, but it's very well done and informative.
I also intermittently listen to the Revolutions podcast on Spotify and Hardcore History on YouTube.

Re: Agriculture, environment and food security.

Seed banks are being utilized sensibl...

Re: Critical Race Theory
My understanding is that the discipline as a whole is driven by ideology much more so than by actual data and rigorous analysis. In concept it’s not a bad thing to look at but in practice at this moment I think it’s a mess. And I agree that it’s a convenient way for those in power to appear to be mo...

Re: The food and drink thread
Today I almost made “red” beans and rice using pinto beans since I’m out of kidney beans, but I was like, no I just can’t do it. It’s not the same.
Making white beans instead.

Re: Kids Book Recommendations
Now that I have a kid, I’m going to argue that The Little Prince is not a kids’ book. It depends on nostalgia and lost innocence to work. Teenage minimum but early twenties is better.
