Re: What are you reading?
Are you enjoying Moby Dick? I read it too (outside of any school curriculum) and it became a test of endurance to get through it. It's like a 40 page short story about obsession embedded in 800 pages of whaling tedium. Have you got to the section "On paintings of whales" or something like that? Melv...

Re: Gas ranges becoming obsolete
I'm trying to fathom why you may never use a gas range again. Have some states banned them? In any event, I've never used a gas range anyways. They cost more than electric so no rental places never have them, and I have never bothered to buy one as a homeowner. It strikes me as no big deal. Only coo...

Re: Run-up to WW3
That letter seems a bit suspicious. Just a little too accurate about WWI and WWII. So far, wrong about WWII. Was fascism even a thing in 1871? Also, he sure has a burr under his saddle about the Jews. That's typical when it comes to conspiracy theorists, but not so typical about Confederate generals...

Re: Run-up to WW3
The counter point to this argument is : 1) Why has Putin been so public in condemning Prigozhin publicly and continuing to do so after the fact. Failing to punish Prigo makes Putin look soft and/or the FSB look incompetent. Not typical for Putin who likes to project a strong man image at all times. ...

Re: What's going on in your city/country/region?
I'm a bit surprised at how much media coverage this thing has garnered. Almost certain they are dead, but of course, now that's it's drawing eyeballs the media is going to drag this thing out as long as possible. Surely by tomorrow the mission will have to change from rescue to recovery (should alre...

Re: What's going on in your city/country/region?
I believe all communication with the sub was lost a few hours into the dive. The sub has 2 communication options, a text message system and a bare bones "I'm alive" ping. I believe the alive ping is a bare minimum functionality that should operate under anything but catastrophic failure conditions. ...

Re: ChatGPT and AIs
And if the bad guys let AI run wild for nefarious purposes (internet disinformation and the like), the good guys will probably have to let AI run wild as the only tool capable of counteracting the threat.

Re: Little Rants
You are getting into apples vs oranges stuff. Like if Banko had simply run off (even after the fight) I would not suggest he committed a capital offence and be punished at that level, he should have just been charged with shoplifting and assault and given whatever jail time that warrants. But when o...

Re: Little Rants
No, because neither of those people were committing a crime when confronted despite what their confronters might have thought. Their actions played no role in what happened to them (i.e. picking up a product in a retail store or walking through a neighborhood are perfectly reasonable, common, and le...
