Re: The Horse the Wheel and Language

Anthony actually does associate patriarchal societies with herding specifically as herds can be stolen more easily than crops. So you have brothers sticking together to protect the family herd rather than ranging afield from a presumably matrilineal home base. Speaking very broadly, of course. In th...

Kids Book Recommendations

I'll start this thread over here, since it has come in handy. These are some of our favorites so far: Picture Books Margaret Wise Brown: Two Freight Trains, Runaway Bunny Donald Crews: Freight Train, plus like everything else Nina Crews: Below and I'll Catch the Moon Ann Morris: On the Go, Bread Bre...

Re: The Horse the Wheel and Language

So something else I had never thought about before is the impact of the invention of the wheel on European farming. As Anthony imagines it, farming pre-wheel necessarily had to involve a lot of village-wide cooperative hauling. A single family farm just wasn't an option. And then the further implica...

Re: The Horse the Wheel and Language

Anthony presents very detailed arguments that add up to a convincing overall picture. I am definitely not qualified to judge the strength of his evidence, but it makes for a compelling story with a very broad range of tie-ins and implications.

Re: Ask the forum

How do I turn dark mode off? I turned it on but now it's bugging me, and I can't find wherever I found it the first time.

Also, is there any way to make the text size on everything bigger? I'm going blind, and it's worse on my phone.

I have no sense of direction over here.

The Horse the Wheel and Language

This book is about Proto-Indo-European but it covers a *lot* of ground in terms of linguistics, culture, anthropology, archaeology. I'm getting a lot of interesting ideas, insights, and questions from it as I go along, so I figured I'd put them into a thread. Anyone please feel free to jump in and d...

Re: Post your bookshelf

That is such a bummer to hear about the pubs shutting down. I can't even imagine England without pubs. :(

Re: Rules and all that (feedback welcome)

I think the restraining order thing should not apply to public threads. But don't quote the person even in a public thread. Actually the whole restraining order thing seems like it could get complicated and out of hand if not in itself abused, but if we do have it then I think it should not apply to...

You're going to have to elaborate on this one, Roki.

Man? You're seeing? Weakness?? Lunacy?
