Not knowing what radon is could be acceptable (although it's pretty common knowledge by now). Not knowing what a detector is, if that was what she meant, would be rather head shaking.

Re: Child labor vs effective education - which is worse?

OK. But I was thinking more along the 'child labor versus' point. Child labor would be a worse option for a child who could be effectively educated. But yes, if you interpret as a child for whom education is almost certain to fail, I see what you are getting at.

Re: Child labor vs effective education - which is worse?

You mean ineffective education right? Within reason, some students are not academically inclined. But I think everybody can learn to read, write and do basic arithmetic (although the latter may not really be needed in the computer/calculator age). After say, junior high, the non academic types would...

Re: Ship of Theseus Paradox

I'd still vote for the ship Theseus owns. And keep in mind Theseus replaced those planks for a reason. Weathered, cracked, barnacled, what have you. Some of those planks replaced in the later years were probably on their last legs. The copy ship from recycled planks is probably pretty rickety. I wou...

Re: Run-up to WW3

Once Israel gets organized for a counter attack, there is going to be hell to pay in the Gaza strip. And if that incites Hezbolla and other pro-Palestine groups to stick their nose in, who knows where it will end?

Re: Seen on the internet

The thing is, with ultra stupid people (i.e. the types that fall for conspiracy craziness), is they never follow up on their own nonsense. So that fact that millions (many millions) of people who have been vaccinated and don't turn their phones off, will suffer zero effects, will not be mentioned. O...

She should sue the shit out of him, regardless of the legal outcome.

Although this guy seem cracked enough that he might try to kill her. It has that severe domestic (or toxic relationship) abuse vibe to it.

Re: What's going on in your city/country/region?

Biden appears to be somewhat of a failure at raising either children or dogs. He's no better at running a country for that matter. His only hope is Trump's unpalatability.

Re: What are you reading?

Are you enjoying Moby Dick? I read it too (outside of any school curriculum) and it became a test of endurance to get through it. It's like a 40 page short story about obsession embedded in 800 pages of whaling tedium. Have you got to the section "On paintings of whales" or something like that? Melv...

Re: Gas ranges becoming obsolete

I'm trying to fathom why you may never use a gas range again. Have some states banned them? In any event, I've never used a gas range anyways. They cost more than electric so no rental places never have them, and I have never bothered to buy one as a homeowner. It strikes me as no big deal. Only coo...
