Also Madrigal being Argentian is unlikely to know much about salads either, based on my experience for the last few years as for all intents and purposes a full time carnivore.

Yeah, whenever I go to Argentina I eat nothing but steak, red wine, potatoes and yerba mate for two weeks. Even the breakfast selections in hotels are nearly all meat. Love it. And incredible Malbec.

when you visit groups of farmers nearer Bolivia you get red wine mixed with coca cola and coca leaves - surprisingly nice.

You see very few fatties though, unlike Brazil where the adoption of the American diet seems to have created a lot of obesity.

Are both of you under the impression that you can't make a salad out of meat? I'm just saying, potatoes and meat can be a salad and not even a bad one. A little salt, oil, some fresh herbs and gelsemium elegans flowers for flavor. Consider it.

@djm, they do the coke and red wine thing in various Latin American countries, and apparently it's a big thing in Spain (dunno if you've seen it, @Ferrus - Rioja libre?). I think the practice dates back to the 70s but quickly became frowned upon, at least around here. I never tried it but I can imagine how some coca cola could improve a cheap red wine, at least I'm no stranger to wine-in-a-box after all the socialist parties I went to, lol.

It's called kalimotxo (or calimocho in Spanish) and is strongely associated with the Basques who make bad red wine palatable by mixing it with coca-cola. It probably was even derived in South America from them as I was reading the other day that Basques make a large proportion of the wealthier part of population in Chile at least. The Spanish philosopher Unamuno once said "Hay al menos dos cosas que claramente se le pueden atribuir al ingenio vasco: la Compañía de Jesús y la República de Chile".

Also it is funny because one of the wine producing regions in Argentina is La Rioja, which of course is also the name of a major wine producing region in Spain, so it is kind of confusing.

Well having been accustomed to Argentinian food for a while there are other stuff (mainly Italian derived such as pasta, gnocchis, pizzas) and also variations of meat such as milanesas (like Wiener Schnitzel) or a meat stew such as locro for special occasions. I quite like chimichurri also. But certainly not health food.

Also at an Argentinian asado I saw a whole baby roast pig being roasted (called a lechón). I am fully convinced that if more kids were exposed to that in the UK from a young age vegetarianism would disappear overnight.

I wish vegetarianism would disappear, it is annoying virtue seeking nonsense. My daughters descent into serious illness with anorexia started with veganism and I take a dim view of it. It's bad for the environment as well.

Ferrus, I didn't know that about the Basques and Chile. I guess I would if I were more involved in Chilean society or at least read some history beyond the shit that went down in the 70s.

Yes, this is a very typical Christmas/New Years kind of food, the way some cultures do stuffed turkey, the centerpiece of those meals in Argentina is baby pig.

This may be it's own thread kind of thing, but I think vegetarianism is catching on so fast among millenials and Gen Z that they might actually reach critical mass sometime soon. I think they are already starting to force the food industry into making changes.

Personally I'm very susceptible to anything depicting animal cruelty and the idea of vegetarianism floats in my mind pretty often (while I cook meat 6 days a week, lol). I'd do lacto-ovo-pesco again but it's just a bit overhwelming to consider. How is veganism bad for the environment? I would never consider veganism.
