What are you listening to?
Re: What are you listening to?
Galaxy Express 999 (Ginga Tetsudou 999) Manga/Anime series by Leiji Matsumoto
Symphonic Poems, music from movies, and TV series) 5 GB (though very good, I might pass on it)
I had a collection of the OST music zip file had a "catastrophic failure" which is why I ended up looking up the music.
I was just finishing up adapting English dubs to original Japanese videos (when they were able to be matched up) to the series in addition to doing some AI translations of Chinese subs (as the original English or Japanese format of subs were most always incompatible if they weren't in Chinese SRT format.) Finding ANYTHING on this series despite it being regarded as a significant anime series, is practically nonexistent (you are more likely to find random trolling such as people uploading a GIGI Unrated movie subs to one of the movies, which is kind of interesting, and for awhile I entertained the idea of adding it to an 8 GB movie file.) I was tempted to upload some of the English translations but assumed people wouldn't be able to find any of the correct videos to go along with it. I believe I was able to collect most of the OVA, and if I had a list to describe the series as a whole, I would summarize it as:
It primarily started off as a TV series, it's mostly overlooked in the west because it rarely made any adaptions apart from specific movies or specials, most of which are kind of difficult to come across. Usually what became popular in Japan inspired other series local to the West, often impacted by localization attempts or attempts to monetize things differently.
(mainly it started as a serialization of the MANGA)
[1978][TV] Galaxy Express 999
3 movies:
[1979][Movie] Galaxy Express 999
[1981][Movie] Goodbye Galaxy Express 999 Andromeda Terminal
[1998][Movie] Galaxy Express 999 Eternal Fantasy
I've never found an English dubbing of the 1998 movie.
[1979-1981] TV Specials 1-4, Featurette
1 Can You Live Like A Warrior (84m USA) (94m JAP)
2 The Eternal Traveler Emeraldas
3 Can You Love Like a Mother (122m Harmony Gold DUB) (133m JAP)
4 The Boy's Journey and Departure (ballad)
(Featurette) Ginga Tetsudou 999 Claire of the Glass
OVA mini-series
[1998][OVA] Queen Emeraldas
[2000-02, 07, 09][OVA] Maetel Legend,
[2002][WEB OVA] Indestructible Space Rail Ep 1-6 (HD exists)
[2004][OVA] Space Symphony Maetel (13 Ep)
Minor spinoffs (or exclusive event videos)
[2000][Movie] Galaxy Express 999 Claire of Glass 3D
[2001][Movie] Rainbow Signpost (Kitakyushu Expo)
[2007][Movie] Galaxy Express 999 Starry Sky Time Machine
[2009][Movie] Galaxy Express 999 Fly to the Diamond Ring
[2010][WEB] Energy Journey Beyond Time and Space
[2014] Freeze Anime 2014
It's almost impossible to understand what the series is about unless you were to watch it, and even then it might have always been regarded as too mature for most audiences since it involves a lot of introspection and thoughts about existence. When you consider the only time Pokemon had a cartoon with the appearance of guns, the episode was never rereleased and was banned, along with anything construed as possibly offensive.
I can see this series inspiring One Piece with the pirate themes, but also Final Fantasy with the likes of the Vivi character, or the train scene in FF6.
Here's a 3 hour composition to get an idea of what the TV show looks (originally 113 EP which is over 24 hours.) The movies have better animation, though you will also need to get a high resolution scan of it to really appreciate it.

Re: What are you listening to?
Last year we put together a two channel stereo system for our house: 2 speakers with a subwoofer, amplifier and CD player. Nothing fancy but decent quality. We both had dozens of CDs we'd dragged around for years, and we've been adding some CD's in here and there. A new CD typically costs $10, which is what an vinyl album ran back in 1980 when I was putting together my first music collection, so they are a good deal.
One group getting a fair amount of play are The Cars.
