Drink like an Egyptian: 5,000-year-old yeast resurrected to brew ancient beer

https://www.cbc.ca/radio/quirks/august- ... -1.5155502

***************

Modern brewing traditions are based on a very brief antiquity:

Farmhouse Beers: Find The Best Before They Become Extinct
https://www.forbes.com/sites/garystolle ... 0ebe9d76ca

The Norwegian Kveik has a lot of variations, and I was initially going to buy the Lutra strain and upon checkout it was out of inventory, and the Omega Yeast 091 Hornindal strain I ended up getting produces a tropical and dried stone fruit flavor profile and is the parent of Lutra (which gives a clean and lager effect when brewed at ale temperatures, with no specific fruit flavor imparted.) The only alternative at the time is the Espe strain which is it's own separate strain and gives a pear fruit flavor profile.

I'm going to revive the yeast from a bottle using Jovaru yeast strain from a farmhouse ale I made prior and may experiment on both the Kolsch and Maibock, swapping it with the Kveik yeast. (Update) some vulture capital organization seems to have taken over a popular homebrew company and rather than support it in it's new transition to a warehouse ecommerce and wait another week, I'm going to go elsewhere.

Looking up pepper plants (I have a few that are a couple-years old) and how long they live, I realized the Spanish missions in California introduced pepper trees, many of which have grown for over 150 years.

Now you see it (and move the date to current,) now you don't.
https://goo.gl/maps/jEKbETHqi8rfeKBw5

https://pajaronian.com/154-year-old-pep ... e-removed/

A law firm had already been there for over a decade and seems to have decided to get rid of it, which likely would not have survived retransplanting (and likely they didn't want to pay to do so; it is a law firm, after all. . . F'ing bastards.) Surprisingly no one has ever commented on the absence of the tree, and maybe because it's just California. . . Who gives a damn about ancient forests? ? ? Chop off a few root node structures from ancient redwoods because some weed smoker wants a few puffs from Smokey the Bear?

You can still see the oldest (circa 1825-1840) Pepper Tree at Mission San Luis Rey

Another interesting tree to read up on.

I suspect the tree was not kept alive, even though it could have been (for over $200k,) and according to Quora, often plants won't survive::

Mary Ellen Pleasant

When slavery was around a woman would eavesdrop on conversations and began using what they talked about to start investing, and she acquired so many businesses and properties that she would amass what would be $30 million. Some of her properties were likely under the name of white men who would assist her in investing, as otherwise it would restrict her options.

This is the kind of crap someone would see and ignore inside an abandoned house.

The Chicken Cup - most expensive teacup (actually wine) at U$36 million. The 3-inch cup from the Ming Dynasty's Chenghua Emperor (1465 to 1487)
https://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/articl ... p-tea.html

You could say that someone using such a cup he just paid $36 million for and using it to drink hot tea out of, is pretty damn stupid. . . And the Sotheby Chairman calling it the 'Holy Grail of Chinese Art' sounds like a huge diss.

These were popular, though probably just like a lot of ceramics you find in modern times, mass-produced.
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Chicken_C ... henghua%29

You can even buy your very own for $6.

Pretty impressive-looking, hand-painted house interior from someone with my same last name, who would have worked on it from the end of 19th century.

Labourer who turned his cottage into a William Morris ( https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/William_Morris ) showcase
https://www.theguardian.com/culture/201 ... s-showcase

Video and a crowdfunding after they already received 675,000 pounds sterling to restore it, where their goal was 1,000,000 (and they charge 15 pounds for admittance apparently, while even offering a special tour for "high tea" and a tour for 1,000?)
https://www.crowdfunder.co.uk/p/stories ... parr-house

The paint can they show in one of the images is highly toxic vermillion (which contains mercury, and eventually was replaced with cadmium which is also toxic) and so is the white paint based on lead, along with many other things, and so they might have actually replaced all of the painting inside to make it accessible to the public.

It still looks pretty cool but someone has to actually find interest in it apart from it being a curiosity.

I'm sure people could find places that are significantly cheaper (many places found along the countryside in many countries can charge about $40, and some are possibly even older than these Italian villas.)

Edwin Booth (Broth of John Wilkes Booth) saved the life of Robert Lincoln (the first son of Abraham) who was being shoved towards and nearly falling onto a train as it was starting, which could potentially have killed him.

He also had a deranged fan of play performances which lead to two gunshots as he was performing.

During this time it was common for Chinese nobles to take "immortality potions" (check Wikipedia: 'Chinese alchemical elixir poisoning' ) The first emperor Qin Shi Huang famously died ingesting it, and it contained mercury (and other things.) Lady Dai (Xin Zhui) had mercury and lead in her stomach.

Deer with crucifix seems like an entheogen reference (at a time when many mushrooms symbolized being "born again?") The deer was considered a reference to amanita mushroom, which they seek out beneath pine trees (no other reference could be made to it.)

Life hacks:

Ancient Romans Brushed Their Teeth with Urine
https://www.ancientoriginsunleashed.com ... dium=email

"While today we flush our urine away without giving it a second thought, in ancient times it was considered a valuable commodity. Urine contains a wide array of important minerals and chemicals such as phosphorus and potassium. The Romans believed that urine – both human and animal - would make their teeth whiter and keep them from decaying, so they used it as a mouthwash and mixed it with pummis to make toothpaste. In fact, urine was so effective that it was used in toothpastes and mouthwashes up until the 1700s."

Ainu tattooed around their lips to attract people (it might be slightly better than Geisha staining their teeth black. . .)
https://historydaily.org/women-with-tattoed-lips-ainu

In one of the photos, you can see a woman giving sake to an alcoholic bear (might be a Russian bear?)

I guess the bear was coping for the fact, that back in Siberia they used to cuddle with spiked suits.
