I find it strange anyone would think it did unless there was a permanent police sentinel in every school.

I think there actually are in some places (or at least security of some kind). Probably not the kinds of schools where these shootings usually happen, though (which tend to be more middle-class/ upper-middle class areas).

I'd much rather people address the root of why these things happen, but knowing the country I live in, it's more likely that it will just lead to the growth of the "security" state (of which police are a part) at the same time we bloviate about how much more free we are than anyone else.
