I was wondering if, the reason I've never seem Mallort it is due to the stuff flying off the shelves, or if because, "it tastes like an abortion clinic in Iceland," along with "product of a Gypsy curse." Others have made similar analogies, that it tastes like pencil shavings, and, "like an electrical fire that starts under a pile of tires, but only if the fire department fights the fire with Bactine and self-loathing"

Why do we NOT recommend MRE's?

"I will stop the story at this point to tell you about IMPs. I have a background with Army Cadets as well as a lot of friends currently serving in the armed forces, so I am no stranger to Canadian IMPs. Just like American MREs, Canadian military food is ideal for camping and hiking -- it is pre-packaged and ready to eat, requiring no cooking nor even any water. Just open and eat. They are packed with calories -- one Canadian IMP contains enough energy to sustain you for one whole day. I had packed enough to eat two a day -- one for breakfast and one for dinner.

Anyone who has been in the military or read this site knows that IMPs and MREs pretty much stop your digestive system right in its tracks.

There at the base camp, the IMP did not go down easily. It caused a lot of cramps, gas, and general discomfort in my stomach. But because I was so worn out from the hike, I promptly fell asleep.

I woke up to the hot morning sun cooking me inside my tent -- not the feeling I needed to wake up to.

The hike that day was kept simple for my benefit -- we explored close to camp and came back for the evening. No mountain climbing today. Over the course of the day I regained my old composure, my appetite, and my strength by eating properly, although it was a fight to do so.

It was not until the third day that things started feeling heavy. Though IMPs were designed to make a person hold out under normal conditions, I really doubt they were tested for my circumstances. On that third day we made a long hike and discovered a really great glacial stream. It was getting close to thirty degrees Celsius outside (86º F), and the ice-cold glacial stream was welcomed with open arms and open Nalgine bottles. That is when I realized that the grogan beast growing in my stomach wanted to be birthed.

I let the group know, grabbed my toilet paper, and went off a ways from the stream so that I could do my thing. What I gave birth to out there was probably the largest and most discolored turd I have ever dropped. It was about eight inches long and equivalent in girth to a soda can. The thing that made it special: it was half-and-half colored. The first half was black, pitch black -- then it abruptly changed to a normal brown.

I am never really one to stare at my own work. I usually have a look and flush it away. But because this was in the bush, out in the open, and not going anywhere, I stared at it for a time, wondering if maybe I had some internal damage from being so sick.

I alerted my friends to my new child and expressed my concern. One of the guys said that the black color was probably my body's way of flushing out all the contaminants in my system after being so sick. Everyone else agreed, and that is where I let it rest.

The rest of my trip went normally. After that poop I felt infinitely better, even better than I did before I got sick. The IMPs did their work and kept me going through the rest of the trip. For me, the poop story ends there.

But this saga does not. You see, my perfectly healthy friend Pete was on the exact same diet I was. And the IMPs were doing to him exactly what they were supposed to do.

We returned back from the hiking trip and the day of rest passed. The next day, I asked Pete up if he gotten rid of his IMPs yet. Nope.

One week later he had still not gone.

We were on a trip to Vancouver, stopped for food in a city called Kamloops, when it hit. We had just gotten our meals and had started to eat when Pete abruptly stopped, looked at me, and uttered, "It's time." He got up and left the table. The dude was gone for about twenty minutes.

I had just finished eating my meal when Pete walked back to the table, his face beet red, laughing hysterically. I asked him what was so funny. "Go have a look for yourself," he said. I knew that whatever he had done would probably require us to pay and leave the restaurant immediately. So I decided to have a look before we made our exit.

Upon opening the men's room door, I noticed water on the floor pooled around the only stall in the washroom. I peaked around the door. What I saw amazed me.

My friend Pete is not a big guy -- maybe five foot two and 130 pounds soaking wet. This guy produced something that I can only equate to a NFL football-sized (and shaped!) turd. Not only that, but it had its own unique tannish-manila color to it. And, surprisingly for something that size, it was floating in water that was up to the rim of the toilet.

I started to laugh as I made my way back to the table. We had a good chuckle at the Godzilla turd that my friend produced and planned to make our exit. But we felt bad for the poor bastard who would have to deal with it. So we wrote "Sorry" on a napkin in black felt pen, took the napkin into the stall, placed it on the lid of the toilet, hoped he'd see the humor in the situation, and made our exit. Life went back to normal."

What's the worse that could happen?

The Delft ceramics were extremely popular since the early 17th-century, and I'm hoping that the new renovators prevent their theft along with the numerous antiques, as more than likely hundreds of thousand of dollars worth of just the ceramics, in addition to the tapestries (some of these are museum quality,) could easily be a target for theft. I suspect many silver would have been laying around, but I also wonder if the French palaces being explored in these videos had some dark history with the Nazi occupation (Vichy France which some resisted https://kwanza.fr/catalogue/french-cast ... -the-nazis .)

Only in Florida could you be talking to the President, and not even realize it. . .

I couldn't help but notice 'Friends' beans were not available after Covid, but so did B&M beans close up the original factory that's been manufacturing for over 150 years (which may just affect the original glass jar containers which I just bought for $.75 cents each when people are selling these for $10 on Ebay.)

If you want one last look at the B&M factory, I doubt the people standing next to the photographer had any idea this landmark building was soon to be converted into a college campus.

I just started looking into A&P (Atlantic and Pacific) which was a grocery chain that existed up until 2015, which I never heard of even though it was by far the largest grocery chain for a very long time, and dates back to the mid 19th century. Apparently the older practice of requesting for someone behind a counter to get your grocery list order together and then ring you up, instead of a customer picking out things they wanted, changed with this company.

Looking at who made things for the MRE packages reveals a lot of industries that are no longer around, such as this 'Jack Frost Sugar Cane Factory' (neat photo.)
https://collections.lacma.org/node/218644

Though not mentioned in this article, if you consider, the soft drink industry transitioning towards corn syrup is perhaps one reason Jack Frost closed in 1994 (a decade after the centenarian who inherited the family business couldn't keep the company from falling into bankruptcy a decade after his death, and Domino sugar also closed down in 2004, around the time the empty factories were finally being dismantled. Also, corn was getting subsidized which is something the Australian Journalist John Pilger covered in Florida.

A few key notes

Inheritance taxes in France are up to 60% of the value of the inheritance. And its a personal tax, payable from one's own pocket, before the distribution of funds from the inheritance. Meaning you must pay upfront 50-60% of the value of a castle, in order to own it as your own property. The value of most castles like this one is between 500,000-3,000,000 EUR. Half of that is a lot of money to have and give away as tax.
That might explain a significant number of the abandoned properties, the cost up front as well as the legal requirements to address it (such as a will that doesn't have issues due to circumstances, but also perhaps various debts that would be incurred in the process of inheritance,) then it seems that such things were clearly an issue.

Judging from the outside property exploration and the basement of empty wine bottles (which apparently operated from wine barrels being bought by the barrel and then filled into the empty bottles, where some people might mix various wines into a blend and sell it,) it very clearly had a significant wine operation with agriculture elements. It also seems as though the outside was being maintained for whatever reason which is not atypical for abandoned properties, but I don't know why they don't ensure the water doesn't cause a bigger issue, such as operating dehumidifiers.)

Also the piles of junk magazines are often dismantled for advertisements and sold by individual pages on ebay for $12+ per sheet, which judging from the popular 1950s magazines in the attic that probably require a truck load, would probably prove lucrative.

It seems as though a lot of things could have been done with the property prior to it's likely abandonment around 1994, and it seems as though most of the rooms hadn't been used in close to a century even at the time it was abandoned (though some of the closets reminded me of those from my grandparents who had stuff stored away from the 1970s.) These kinds of videos reframe your perspective.

NTSB: Collision Caused by Transiting Houston Ship Channel at Sea Speed

A VERY SPECIAL KIND OF RETARD!
Spoiler
Show
On May 10, 2019, Genesis River prepared to depart Houston and took aboard two pilots. Upon coming aboard the vessel, the first pilot instructed the bridge crew to put both radars on standby and turn both ECDIS terminals off because the distracting proximity alarms on the devices could not be disabled. The pilots proceeded to navigate down the channel visually, with assistance from a portable pilot unit (PPU). During the transit, the pilots discussed the vessel's "little bitty rudder" and said that "she's takin' lotsa wheel" to maneuver, according to VDR data. Shortly after, the second pilot (who had the conn) called for full sea speed - a common practice among pilots once within the Lower Houston Ship Channel, according to NTSB - and the vessel slowly sped up to 12 knots.

Do schools kill creativity?

Anka Park aka Wonderland Eurasia
Demetlale, 405. Caddesi No:106, Yenimahalle/Ankara, Turkey

News has also been saying, "Turkey’s inflation for the month of May rose by an eye-watering 73.5% year on year, its highest in 23 years, as the country grapples with soaring food and energy costs and President Recep Tayyip Erdogan’s long-running unorthodox strategy on monetary policy."

And the timing with Covid was really bad for this, but can't help sympathize with the opinion that the park was atrociously organized, which caught up with it (and with the inflation being what it is, it doesn't look as though this park could be economically run using both the electricity requirements and the water in a dry region, needed to keep things looking presentable.)

A lot of theme parks seem to be huge money pits but also Turkey's geopolitical nature scares off people who might otherwise visit the country.

The photos from when it was open look nearly as desolate as in this video, and the fact that 3/4 of a billion dollars were invested, and just sitting there to rust, seems to summarize the enthusiasm they must have felt when putting the theme park together.

Someone commented on it:
Spoiler
Show
I fly F-18s and can provide some insight to the last 3 videos. These videos are footage from the FLIR. At the top left you can see the FOV "NAR" which is the smallest FOV available for the sensor. So it's zoomed in as far as it can go without a digital zoom. The number beneath "IR" in the top center is the degrees in azimuth the FLIR is looking in relation to the aircraft, and the number on the left is degrees in elevation. On the right you can see 'X.X RNG' which is the range in nautical miles to the tracked object, and below that is the closure to the object in knots (ie the aircraft is closing in on that object at that airspeed). On the bottom right is the altitude of the aircraft, and the bottom left is the Mach number of the aircraft 'M 0.XX'

So for the first video, putting all those numbers together, you guys made a valid assessment that the object isn't moving that much. What's interesting to me, is that unless they were already looking in the area and saw the 'bird,' there would've been no way for them to see it in the first place. The symbology on the right tells me that the FLIR is in a mode set to track air targets, meaning that the FLIR had to be cued to that object via the radar (then a track obtained via the FLIR. The guy exclaiming the he "got it" is referring to getting the FLIR track on the object which can be hard to do.). So the radar had to pick up the object in the first place. So don't think the object is a bird. It has to be big enough for the radar to pick up - likely a weather baloon or something. Also, due to the speed of the parallax, I would say the object is pretty high off the water - much higher than a bird would fly.

For the last two videos. I agree with your assessments.
