I'm wondering why they didn't try explosives under the bow sand formation to induce collapse of the upper layer.
Where would it go though? the sand has to go somewhere and if it just settled further into the canal it probably would just cause more problems. Disperse over a large area and flow down the canal hopefully like kicking up sand in a lake/river.
