An Endling

Post by Utisz » Sun Mar 28, 2021 7:43 am

He sat alone, letting the red light blink over his naked body. She had agreed to turn out the other lights, and to let him be. The red light should mean his death, and yet he watched it. Despite what the years had taught him, maybe they could not control for everything.

  1. continue watching
  2. ask her about the light
  3. get up

"What's up with the light?", he finally asked into the darkness.
Her response seeped from all directions, as if he were inside her. "It blinks when the external door is opening."
 "Is it opening?"
 "No."
 "So the light is fucked?"
 "It would appear so."
"I thought that if anything were to go haywire it would be me."
 "That is unlikely."
He stared again at the light. "Are you messing with this light in order to adjust me? Did you calculate that I needed this uncertainty?"
 "You—"
"But then you would predict that I would react like this. Is this what you expected? Am I playing along correctly? Am I fitting your model?"
"You know I cannot answer these questions."
 The light stopped blinking.

  1. continue sitting
  2. get up and ask her to put on the lights
  3. try do something unexpected

He rose to his feet and arched his back.
"We haven't played this game before", she said. "You never liked it as a child but still you remember the words."
Turning to face the darkness of the opposite wall, he took a deep breath.
"Red Rover, Red Rover. Let him come over."
He ran at the wall head-first. As he got closer, he closed his eyes to embolden his legs and blunt his panic. His head reached the membrane of the wall, which received him indifferently up to his clavicles. With the initial momentum spent, he pumped his legs one last time, as if to make a point. Out of breath, he slumped to his knees and watched the wall slowly reform in front of his face.
"Why me?", he asked defeatedly, after some time.
"I often ask myself the same question. If they think you should know, they will tell you when you arrive."
Her answer goaded him to ask the question he had managed to resist for so long.

  1. ask the question
  2. ask a different question
  3. rest

"Has anyone lost their mind with you?", he asked.
"You will have to be more specific."
"Have any of those you used for training gone crazy?"
"In the early days, yes. But I have improved."
 "What happened to them?"
"They sacrificed themselves so I could learn. And I did learn"
 "What happened to them?"
 "They did their part."

  1. ask the question you wanted to ask
  2. continue asking about the martyrs
  3. rest

A deep breath came over him and drew sleep into his eyes. It was a familiar call that he resented less over time. He was surrounded by darkness and thorned with light. Though he rarely remember his dreams, he supposed that they too had light in them. The forgetting of them came gradually and lightly. Everything would be forgotten soon.

 "Tired?"
 "You could say that."

He set himself straight, and walked along the convex wall to where he had taken to sleeping recently. He stretched out naked on the floor.

 "Would you like some company?"

  1. yes
  2. ask what she means
  3. no
