Re: Run-up to WW3
You know that Russia is just selling those resources to India and China instead of Europe, right? Their energy profits are at record highs.

I'm wondering if Putin wasn't pleased with his horoscope reading?
Update: I'm adding a commentary from someone in Moscow, who seems to suggest that Putin had a hand in the killing of Darya.

Oil is not natural gas. No doubt Russia will eventually find alternate markets for the gas too, although the infrastructure isn't there.puerile_polyp wrote: ↑Sat Aug 20, 2022 11:53 pmYou know that Russia is just selling those resources to India and China instead of Europe, right? Also don't see how their energy profits can be at record levels when they are selling oil at a $25 discount (according to your article) and their natural gas sales are down 50%.
The point about 'shooting themselves in the foot economically' is they have demonstrated themselves to be an unreliable source for fossil fuels to the west, and now those countries are trying to find alternatives. Likewise, we have demonstrated ourselves to be an unreliable partner to Russia with sanctions, but have much less to lose since Russia has a pretty small economy. And Europe is going to pay a lot more for energy.

Re: Run-up to WW3
The price in the West is more than $25 higher than it was before the buildup to the invasion, and China and India are buying a lot more oil than before. That's how their energy profits are at record highs, and they can afford to restrict the flow to Europe as a punitive measure.starjots wrote: ↑Mon Aug 22, 2022 2:27 amAlso don't see how their energy profits can be at record levels when they are selling oil at a $25 discount (according to your article) and their natural gas sales are down 50%.

Russia may be a smaller economy, but we're seeing them form an economic bloc with China, India, Iran, and possibly Brazil and South Africa. Decades of sanctions have motivated these countries to band together for protection from the West.

It should be mentioned that people from the Solomon Islands believe this story to be BS. . . Is it possible they are keeping hush-hush in their media and it's only being reported elsewhere? (probably. . .)

Re: Run-up to WW3
Major shift of momentum from Russia to the Ukrainian side from a 'surprise' offensive south of Kharkiv. Other than the Russian pull back from Kiev, this is the best news so far during this war.
Generic talking head interview from Al Jazeera
Detailed blow by blow of Ukrainian offensive in last 24 hours. This particular youtube channel has five or six excellent videos covering the offensive in the last week.
In WW2 Churchill speak, this strikes me as 'not the beginning of the end, but the end of the beginning.'
On the other hand, Russia still has several possible responses -- mass mobilization, totally cutting off energy exports to Europe, stirring up some crazy nuclear powerplant blackmail (already in the works), becoming China's bitch for life, and mutual immolation.

Re: Run-up to WW3
Considering Russia is a Fascist State and Fascist States are Fascist rather than Authoritarian because they are a cult of personality and they all decline and fall eventually as the cult of personality grows old and declines... Putin could be removed and Russia could withdraw from Ukraine.starjots wrote: ↑Sat Sep 10, 2022 9:07 pmOn the other hand, Russia still has several possible responses -- mass mobilization, totally cutting off energy exports to Europe, stirring up some crazy nuclear powerplant blackmail (already in the works), becoming China's bitch for life, and mutual immolation.
Must be hard to support the all powerful Putin when he's had his arse kicked for 200 days.
Re: Run-up to WW3
I have hope in Russia’s civilized population. They rank among the most educated. (this in no way condones Russian government actions. We are not convinced). Nevertheless, they seem to be more reasonable than the governments of Latin America or Africa. Hopefully, this will be the last time they try to gain territory via war and invasion. Their strategy is outdated since now soft power and world influence are more important than territorial gains. Come on, they vacation in South East Asia and other tropical paradises without issues, at least before. Everything is on the internet. Also, with climate change a lot of Russia is becoming arable or inhabitable and the seas can be more easily sailed. Russians just need to cut back on alcohol.
