Putin The Terrible: The Cowardice Of A Shunned Tyrant
https://3quarksdaily.com/3quarksdaily/2 ... yrant.html

Worth reading and it also suggests the precedent of Russia began from the time of Ivan IV.

Ivan also organized what was considered Russia’s first version of a political police force in what was called the Oprichniki. The Oprichniki was a group of carefully selected men to serve as Ivan’s personal police regiment. They numbered around 6,000 men at its peak, dressed entirely in black, rode black horses, and used the broom and dog’s head as their symbols. The broom symbolized sweeping away of traitors and the dog’s head symbolized nipping at the heels of enemies. If only the Oprichniki were as gentle as rabid dogs. They were known for relentless days of torturing enemies, rapes, whippings, and mutilations. Some suggest the Oprichniki were the ancestors of the KGB.

Ivan the Terrible’s style of ruling seems to have set the pattern for Russia over the last 400 years including today’s wannabe czar, Vladimir Putin. You can hopscotch through Russian history and almost anywhere you land you’ll meet strange, cruel, crazy, and capricious rulers.

Tragedy and Hope: A History of the World in Our Time is a work of history written by Carroll Quigley. The book covers the period of roughly 1880 to 1963 and is multidisciplinary in nature though perhaps focusing on the economic problems brought about by the First World War and the impact these had on subsequent events. While global in scope, the book focusses on Western civilization, because Quigley has more familiarity with the West.

The book has attracted the attention of those interested in geopolitics due to Quigley’s assertion that a secret society initially led by Cecil Rhodes, Alfred Milner and others had considerable influence over British and American foreign policy in the first half of the twentieth century. From 1909 to 1913, Milner organized the outer ring of this society as the semi-secret Round Table groups.
People in Poland target the Russian Ambassador to the country who was placing flowers on a monument to commemorate Russia's involvement with ending Nazi Germany, and the protest was clearly referencing Russia's involvement with Ukraine.

When Russian soldiers had lived in a Ukrainian elementary and left, (literal) crap was found everywhere.
If I didn't put URL around this it would have autoplayed the video https://www.reddit.com/r/ukraine/commen ... &context=3

I think the time when the woman is looking in the Library and wondering why it was disheveled, she was making a bit of a joke (as what else kinds of books does an elementary have?)

Though apparently one of the Russian soldiers asked if they had any books by this poet. . .

Taiwan: China attack not imminent, but US watching closely, says Gen Milley

A person living in Hong Kong found it offensive to suggest that China was intent on invading and taking over Tawain, just as Putin was doing in Ukraine.

Of course, a Russian missile struck a mall with approximately 1000 inside, and allegations that Ukraine has been striking their cities from the edge of the border is probably not without justification, as they have done so in May and have a new attack following the mall incident that seemed to have affected 3 people (in may it was one person that was injured.)

The Excaliber rounds are practically guided missiles with GPS, and when supplying them to Ukraine the 50 mile range was said to be reduced in fear that they would use it to target Russian cities (which they have apparently been doing with artillery.)

I'm predicting the Russians are going to face a devastating loss around the Kherson area... The Ukrainians are blasting the shit out of Stanislav and if they cut off access across the Kakhovka Dam the Russians on the Western side of the Dnipro River will face some serious logistical issues. Getting all those troops back over the Dnipro is going to be a serious problem and the Russians won't want another river crossing massacre. It could be their Mariupol.

The Ukrainians got another Russian General yesterday and the Himars has hit something like 12 ammo dumps plus HQs and other high value targets. Almost nothing in Russian held Ukraine is not in range and the Ukrainians intelligence to pinpoint high value targets appears to be superb.

I'm guessing Zelenskyys million strong army is a bit of propaganda but current Russian recruitment isn't replacing their losses so I imagine someone in the Kremlin is plotting a very unpopular mobilisation...

Nope. And it looks like Trump is coming back, and he will probably win if he does. :banghead:

We're apparently in more or less full panic here. Most people are predicting a Republican blowout in the Congressional elections, and on top of the abortion ruling setting everybody off, now there's a upcoming Supreme Court case in which the plaintiffs are basically arguing that state legislatures are immune to any judicial oversight whatsoever with regard to federal elections, which has a lot of people talking about a coup scenario.

If Trump runs again in 2024, I'm sure that will be an absolute shit show, but apparently the equally insane governor of Florida is cutting into his support as a possible alternative.

Unless there's a dramatic turnaround in the economic situation, I don't think Biden's chances are looking too good either way--but it will probably be close, i.e. another circus of litigation and dipshit conspiracy theories likely to instigate more violence.

Liz Cheney for president. You heard it here first.

*crickets*

Anyway, I thought maybe the abortion ruling would help Democrats in the legislative elections. In any case, it's absolutely insulting that their solution to this whole thing is to vote, when they haven't codified this thing in 50 years.

There is something absurd about AOC and other congresspeople getting arrested for protesting in front of the Supreme Court as if the only thing someone in their position can do about this is walk around the streets shouting like a regular plebeian.

I'd support Liz Cheney in theory. She would certainly be orders of magnitude better than sleepy Joe, Bernie, Kamala or whoever else the Democrats might come up with (Buttigieg, et. al). Not sure if she would cross the aisle, but her political career is over otherwise. She has too much common sense, which is now political suicide in the Republican party.

I will say though, that DeSantis (whom I believe Roger is referring to) is a much better option than Trump. Still a bit crazy sure, but I don't think he's the destroy democracy/hire Rudy Giuliani type lawyers level of Trump crazy. I don't think he will win the nomination over Trump though.
