Latin American Uprisings

WTF, Colombia? These guys are burning down police stations and almost managed to storm Congress. I just wanna add that these things aren't regular occurances in an uprising in this region, it's a whole other level as far as I know. Also, there are almost a hundred people simply missing, which is also really unusual.

It started a week ago, when the govt tried to pass a tax reform lowering the minimum for taxable income (apparently you could be eligibe for income tax if you eared about 650 dollars a month), among other measures. Due to the social uprising, the tax reform was shelved, but the uprising only continued to grow. I think this is the biggest uprising since Chile, Ecuador and others in 2019, which were cut short due to the pandemic. Now that the pandemic has multiplied and amplified people's grievances, I think we could be looking at the start of a new wave.

I'll be posting thoughts here as they come, but for now I'll leave you with the most Latin American song I can think of.

You are probably in a better position than any of us to make sense of it.

I'm guessing pandemic related economic stress has pushed a number of these fragile South American economies over the edge, and as a consequence the people are all riled up.

I have a hard time taking anything about the Colombian government seriously. I assume all the politicians are in the pockets of the drug cartels. Whether they are capable of actually running a country, I have no idea.

I misread the thread little as "Little American Uprisings" (that don't deserve their own thread).

Hypothesis: Jair Bolsonaro (or his son Flavio) used Adriano da Nóbrega (or his hit squad/gang) to kill Marielle Franco (a civil rights activist politician)

Brazil is targeting its black population for death

I've long suspected Bolsonaro to be responsible for the Amazon fires and believe he is a corrupt turd (or clearly is more "progress" focused. . .)

Brazil’s Bolsonaro says he ‘loves’ the Amazon. But his policies are designed to wreak havoc on it

His denial of the fires occurring in the Amazon are akin to Rome burning,

The sooner such shit stains are eradicated from the face of the earth, the better.

On this we can all agree I think!

This too!

I wonder is there a neoliberal leader out there who is not, demonstrably, a corrupt turd, but rather just someone who strongly believes in neoliberalism as the best way forward ...

I agree society has created checks and balances for a reason, and I suspect people that open the flood-gates of instant gratification with indifference to long-term consideration, are creating a systemic imbalance that is too often seeking to exploit the gullible market interest with dubious accolades as job creator, or friend of the farmer (by burning forest and creating for the first time in history an amazon rainforest that emits more CO^2 than it absorbs.)

A comparison to what Bolsonaro is doing now is similar to why Haiti now has deforestation and a collapse of farmland infrastructure (which is actually still very common with modern agriculture methods, unfortunately.)

I'm also reminded of Bill Gates and his land grabbing, while using his non-profit organization as a front for tax evasion. https://childrenshealthdefense.org/defe ... rmer-bill/
