What's this public vote thing in the Eurovision?
Heresy!

UK gets 0 points though so glad I tuned in for that.
Brexit is now complete.

I watched that video again for the umpteenth time (this video has everything, complete with race, class and sex issues!) and then googled a news piece about the two kids featured in it. First, they're both my age, 1979ers. He's an evangelist pastor these days and she's a veterinarian.

Edit: The singer was murdered a few years ago. :/

Jendrik's video reminds me of this dialogue from QI:

Sandi Toksvig: "It's like the gay Olympics... Is that a thing? It should be a thing if it's not a thing."

Audience member: "It's called Eurovision!"

Searching for the quote, it seems that someone wrote a paper along these lines:

The ‘Gay Olympics’?: The Eurovision Song Contest and the politics of LGBT/European belonging

The continentals are petty.

Switzerland were robbed. I/We think that was the best entry. That dude can hit them notes and the video with him in the car was neat.

Eurovision! 1965! France Gall! That crushing cynicism that makes you love French pop!

Well holy shit. This existentialist monstruosity is absolutely mesmerizing. And she's got some gestures that seem to suggest she'd be more comfortable as a raging rock star.

Holy shit indeed. For what it's worth, in 1965 France had had its own Vietnam and followed it up with a second Vietnam in Algeria.

Sure, sure, but also most yé-yé girls were born during or shortly after the Nazi occupation and were aggressively exploited by sexual predator writer/manager/mentor figures French culture to this day largely refuses to inhibit, let alone expel, all for the sake of the purity of their artistic output.

But then I suppose there is nothing at all questionable about Serge Gainsbourg writing a song about oral sex for a 16-year-old. Separate the art from the artist!

As Louane sings in Midi sur novembre, "we'll be fine, we'll be fine. I guess."

Anyway, that Eurovision, what a god damn hoot!
