Though I guess I think we've come along way when a gymnast will stop competing to prioritize "mental health".
A long way backwards - what a narcissist. Never heard anyone talk abut 'mental health' here until about five years ago, now all of a sudden its a buzz word.

I would far prefer Britain got back to its traditional 'stiff upper lip' keep your problems to yourself and get on with it attitude. The more you pander to feelings the more flaky people become, it's really not healthy and is most unedifying. Another unwelcome load of guff coming from America.

Not a huge fan of the Olympics, but if an athlete gets to compete in them then they are letting themselves and their country down if they flake out because they're having a bad day. Imagine how the athlete that just missed out on going feels now. Very selfish.

I think she's a liability to any team she's on. She should just train people and maybe do Youtube videos where she could show the world how good she is and cut the parts where she couldn't perform.

I heard it helps to alternate your studying locations when you're memorizing things. I think Biles needs to train that way. She needs to think of big, important venues as just another different place to perform. And her coach should surprise her with various adversities, like making her vault with a balloon taped to her butt, pom poms on her feet, dogs barking, etc.

Good article. I assumed she did well in training but apparently not.

My own country is fortunate that its traditional upper class activities of riding horses, sailing, shooting at things and hitting people with swords are all included. Pretty much guarantees us medals.
And swimming/diving - given they are the only ones who go to schools endowed with olympic sized swimming pools and diving boards.
Ex falso, quodlibet

Oh, I did stop to wonder if she just didn't want to be second best or something like that, after a poor start. But "the twisties" sounds terrifying.

It doesn't seem like it's necessarily related to mental health in all cases though. Have you ever had something you mastered naturally and then one day realized you just lost? The world changes.

That reminded me of the story of two autistic savant brothers who would take turns reciting some sequence of large numbers, prime maybe, not from memory but from their innate ability to calculate them, until one day they lost that ability. In searching for that story I found this one:
“In the years following my first study, and throughout her school days, Nadia was given intensive help with language development and her ability to communicate improved with the production of two/three-word sentences. She also started to draw like an infant so that, for a period, two styles coexisted and sometimes on the same piece of paper. Gradually and inexorably she lost the ability to draw realistically. Unlike some savant artists such as Stephen Wiltshire, who has gone from strength to strength with his drawing, Nadia’s ability appeared to peter out. She is now middle-aged and lives in a specialist care home but for many years she has simply refused to draw.”

Still ahead of Germany in the medal table. Wonder how long that will last?
